LASIK Success Story: Erich from Alhambra, CA

LASIK Success Story: Erich from Alhambra, CA

Today we would like to introduce Erich and hear his LASIK success story.

Thanks for sharing your LASIK success story with us Erich. Let’s start with an introduction of yourself and we can move on from there.

My name is Erich! I am 33 years old and I am a physical therapist. My hobbies include playing basketball and golf. Fun fact, Dr. Soong and I were on the same intramural basketball team at UC Irvine.

Dr. Soong comment: I was a freshmen at UCI and these badass seniors took me under their wings. Our team “Coldblooded” never won an intramural championship but we had a lot of fun playing with each other.

Describe briefly your experience with glasses and contact lenses before your eye surgery.

I’ve been wearing glasses or contacts since I was in high school. In the last few years, I would typically wear glasses regularly and use contacts when I’m playing sports.  My vision wasn’t terrible, but it definitely needed correction for almost all daily activities from the moment I woke up until I went to sleep.

What was the motivation behind your decision to pursue LASIK surgery?

The motivation to pursue Lasik was so that I would no longer have to deal with the hassle of glasses or contacts. Contacts were uncomfortable and dry if I wore them too many hours. I also couldn’t wear them for too many consecutive days or my eyes would become too dry and irritated. Glasses had a different type of discomfort, they would slide off my face, or steam up when I ate anything hot or soupy. I couldn’t exercise or do anything active with them on.

Describe the LASIK consultation process.

The consultation process was fantastic, there wasn’t any sense of pressure to commit to anything. There was no “car salesman” tactics to pressuring me into getting the procedure. An examination was performed to determine whether I was a candidate for lasik. Then education was provided about the procedure itself. Payment options were then discussed. Basically, all information was given to me so that I can make my own informed decision about getting Lasik.

Were you aware of the possible LASIK complications or risks prior to your surgery?

Yes, Dr. Soong had educated me on the possible outcome of LASIK. Bright Vision Optometry and the staff at the LASIK center were very informative during the consultation.

Describe the day of the surgery. Were you scared or nervous?

The day of the surgery was exciting. I only heard good things about the procedure, and was ready to have my vision corrected. I was very much looking forward to not needing glasses or contacts. I was a little nervous before the procedure started, but they made sure I had everything I needed to be calm.

How did the LASIK surgery go in your opinion? Was the surgery faster than expected? Any pain?

The surgery itself was very quick, lasting no longer than 20 minutes total from laying down on the table to walking out of the room. Most of the time was spent preparing my eye lids to keep them open during surgery. There was no pain at all during the actual procedure. The only discomfort felt was only pressure as if my somebody was pressing on my eye. This only lasted for a few seconds.  The doctor was great at communicating with me what to expect every step of the way, so that there wasn’t any anxiety of not knowing what to expect.

It’s been about a month since your surgery, any lingering side-effects? How do your eyes feels?

The first few days after surgery, my eyes were feeling especially dry. Using the eye drops they provided was helpful for that and the dryness improved each day. I was able to resume regular exercise pretty much immediately the next day. For the first two weeks, I had to sleep with plastic covers on my eyes to help me avoid nocturnal eye rubbing.  After two weeks, I was able to resume playing basketball wearing eye protection.

Describe your vision and lifestyle after the procedure.

I have been able to resume my usual lifestyle, including basketball, golf and exercise without any problems. It has been very nice to do my exercise without worrying about my glasses slipping off.

Any advice you would give to someone who is interested in LASIK? Would you recommend the procedure to your friends and family?

I would definitely recommend the procedure for any of my friends and family that may be indicated for lasik.
